A5 CC: Compose and Create

In ELA, we recently watched The Village. It was about a village in the middle of the forest, but no one may leave the village or the “those we don’t speak of” will come into the village and terrorize the people. After viewing, we were then asked to respond to the film.

The techniques in The Village were used to create an eerie, creepy sort of feeling within the plot. Things like sounds, camera angles, echos and even silence as the monster becomes closer to Ivy in the forest. These things all add to the creepy tone. I know that especially in the forest, when Ivy was being followed by the monster, you saw the monster quite far away, but when the camera came behind the tree and back out again, the monster was extremely close. You couldn’t hear the monster sneaking up to the tree. These techniques made it seem like something was going to happen and when you saw the monster, it would make you jump. The director had decided not to include blood or gore in this film. I feel like he would chose not to, to let the viewer use their imagination. We could assume or infer things from the film and imagine what is actually happening instead of having to be told or shown what is happening. Some people may take it differently than others. I feel like this film is directed towards people who enjoy mystery or eerie types of movies. I wouldn’t necessarily enjoy this type of movie, but another person could really enjoy it. It really depends on the person. Overall, I think this movie had many good techniques to add to the eerie feel. Although I don’t enjoy scary movies, I would definitely watch this movie again.
