Letter to a Pal: Week One

Here is my letter to my new pen pals!

Hey! How are you?

This semester in English, we have discussed the topic of visual and non-visual minorities within the world, but what actually is a visual or a non-visual? Well a visual minority is someone who has unique quality that people can actually see. An example would be the different races that we have in society. Some of them, unfortunately, are seen as the minority in our society and sometimes even treated as such. However, a non-visual minority is someone that has a unique quality that someone cannot see. An example of a non-visual is maybe someone who suffers from a mental illness. These people can hide their unique quality if they would like to keep it to themselves. This category fits into the topic of equality in society.

What do you think? Do you think these people of the minority should be treated as equals? I think they should. I mean, they are people too and they should be treated the same way others are treated. I heard your class is learning about stereotypes. What are some of the common stereotypes in your community?

Have a great day!
Brooke

  1. Hi Brooke!
We are Gresa and Julia. We are also 15 years old. Great to meet you.

We know that you had a discussion about the visual and the non-visual minorities in your lessons. An example for the visual minorities in Germany are the refugees and people who live of Hartz IV. Our opinion regarding the refugee crisis, that we feel sorry for them because they had to leave everything behind to flee. And some of them are traumatized because they were on a much to small boat on the sea or lost relatives. But some of them are bad for our country too. It is difficult. We think, it should also allowed refugees to work earlier.

Under certain conditions you can get social Welfare in Germany, if you have lost your job. Then you get money from the state to live a decent life. But some of the people don`t try anymore to find a job, because they get there for example not so much money like in their old job. We think that`s a problem, too.

Now to the invisible minorities in our society as people with disabilities or overweight people.
We find, that some people have to much prejudices. We find that the society should open up and be more tolerant to people with disabilities. They should be better informed and deal with the issues more.

This also applies to overweight people. Some think that these people eat too much and too many calories. But overweight can also be a consequence of a disease. So you should get informed you about their life story before you judge them people.

Do you have siblings and pets?
    What`s your hobbies?
    Where is your favourite place?

Do you like our presentation about us?

We hope you answer us soon.

    Gresa and Julia
